Hospice is a specialized concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Hospice care neither hastens nor postpones death. The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of a patient's life by offering comfort and dignity. March is Social Work Month. This month encourages support of the profession, uplifts social workers, and celebrates their contributions. The theme for this year, chosen by the National Association of Social Work, is “Empowering Social Workers”.

Below is a testimonial from our very own Kim Warner, LMSW, ACHP-SW, Director of Social Work & Bereavement, about why she is a Social Worker for Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties
“People – just like you and me, can experience a terminal diagnosis in the family. It can happen to any of us. When this happens, we are invited into the privacy of their home, when they are most vulnerable, seeking help in one of their greatest times of need. They trust we can help them achieve their loved one’s goal – to die at home comfortably, with those they feel most loved by, surrounding them. With the skills we have refined, the knowledge we have acquired, and the time we are willing to give… we help make this possible. We walk beside them, assisting in many ways, ushering them through this trial. We provide counseling, facilitate conversations, and advocate for the patient’s preferences. It is a privilege to provide quality care to patients and those who love them, making a difference in their struggle with a terminal illness. The circumstances can be very sad, but it is not sad work….. it is gratifying and satisfying. When I reflect on my day’s work and can think “ I made a difference in that person’s life for the better”, than it was a good day. I am grateful to be a Social Worker in Hospice care and that I have these opportunities every day.

This week is Patient Safety Awareness Week, a dedicated time and platform to raise awareness about patient safety and recognize the work already being done.

The safety of our patients is of the utmost importance. During admission and subsequent visits, our staff ensures that oxygen safety protocols are followed. In addition, other environmental factors are reviewed to ensure there are no safety hazards. Falls are a risk for every patient, our staff provides education on how to prevent falls.

Essential items needed to ensure safety for patients and caregivers are often not covered by the Hospice benefit, such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and medical alert systems for patient safety. A donation to the Patient Support Fund allows us to pay for essential items that patients and caregivers may not be able to otherwise afford.

Some of our staff had the privilege of spending this beautiful morning at Stewart Air National Guard Base making Vietnam Veteran keychains with local Veterans and their loved ones.

Special thank you to Charles Faro and the 105th Airlift Wing Alumni Association for partnering with us to organize this event. The keychains made will be given to Vietnam Veterans as a sign of appreciation at upcoming events, and also to our patients who are Vietnam Veterans as part of their honor salute.

Rebuilding From Loss is an in-person bereavement support group being held at our Middletown office on Mondays from 11:00am to 12:30pm starting March 4 through June 10. This group is for anyone who has had a loss in the past two years regardless of if your loved one was on our program. The group is open although we do ask for those who join to remain a member thru June for the full benefit of the group support.

My daughters still have their grief buddies (4 years later) and the crafts they made through this program that helped all of us through our most difficult time. ❤️
